This afternoon we have made the difficult decision to close BCISD campuses to students for Tuesday and Wednesday, September 7th and 8th, 2021. This includes a hold on all extracurricular events and practices. To avoid losing holidays or summer days, we will plan to request that the Board approve a change to the instructional calendar so that September 27th and October 11th will become student days.
As you are aware, COVID-19 cases have continued to spike in Burnet county. In addition to low student attendance rates at all campuses, we are experiencing a large number of staff absences. These absences interfere with safe operations and student supervision as well as challenges for sick or quarantined students to keep pace with makeup work.
Custodial staff will be present on 9/7 and 9/8 to deep-clean campuses, and instructional staff who are able will be working to revise instructional plans accommodating this change to the calendar and planning ways to promote successful student make-up work.
We recognize the difficulty and hardship this creates for many families. Our hope is that by being intentional with these two days, we can make plans to re-open with adequate student supervision across all campuses. One action that would help us tremendously to plan in advance is for families to complete the COVID Self-Reporting Form as early as possible so that we have the information to act as proactively as we can. Thank you in advance for your flexibility and hard work to advance student learning as much as possible during this disruptive time.
